Chelsea sign Enzo Fernandez
The two clubs reached agreement within only 48 hours of negotiations, with Chelsea convinced Benfica to release their 2022 World Cup winner.
It’s also announced on Benfica’s official website about the ludicrous deal while waiting for medical and documents to be done in Portugal, only to beat the clock ahead of 11pm UK deadline (local time).
“Benfica inform that it has reached an agreement with Chelsea FC for the sale of all the rights of the player Enzo Fernandez, for an amount of 121,000,000 euros,” a Benfica statement read.
The midfielder’s former club River Plate will cash in around 30m euros for his transfer to Chelsea , per reports in Argentina, understood to be Sell-on clause between the Argentinian club and Benfica.
His contract with the London club will be eight-and-a-half year.
Record fee for Chelsea and the Premier League history of transfer
The deal breaks the previous Premier League record fee of £100m that Manchester City paid for Jack Grealish when he joined from Aston Villa in 2021.
Enzo came in perfect moment when Chelsea just let their super star Jorginho joining rival Arsenal.
This is Chelsea’s seventh signing of a busy January transfer window, following Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto into the club.
Chelsea’s spending past the £500 million mark under the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital, while their January spending to over £250 million.
The heavy reinforcements are expected to bring the Blues out of crisis in the local league, where they are 10th in the Premier League, 10 points adrift of a top-four spot. They next host local rivals Fulham on Friday.
