Champions League kicked off with Matchday 1 with numerous goals scored, but to pick out the best one, it must be the stunning header from Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel against Atletico Madrid.
Champions League Highlights – Lazio 1-1 Atletico Madrid
The Italians were trailing through Pablo Barrios’ deflected first-half strike and looked set to suffer a damaging defeat in the first return to the UCL Champions League since 2020/21.
But Provedel did not let the home fans down when he came forward deep in stoppage time to net an astonishing leveler amid euphoric scenes inside the Stadio Olimpico.
Five minutes into stoppage time, Ivan, after venturing up the pitch for a last-ditch corner, headed home a cross from Luis Alberto with one of the final touches of the game.
Diego Simeone looked upset when their two points were taken in the dying seconds of the away game on Italian soil.
Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel made history
Provedel became the first goalkeeper to score in a Champions League match since Nigeria’s Vincent Enyeama achieved the feat for Hapoel Tel Aviv 13 years ago, and only the fourth overall.
Provedel’s goal was the sixth by a goalkeeper in the Champions League and only the second from open play after Sinan Bolat scored for Standard Liege against AZ Alkmaar in 2009.
Not Provedel’s first goal in his career
Seeing a goalkeeper score a last-gasp equalizer is stunning, but it was not Ivan’s first in his career. And we expect to see many more from him, if possible.
During his spell with Juve Stabia in 2020, where he moved as a loan transfer from Empoli, the 29-year-old scored an almost identical goal.
Juve Stabia was behind by 1-2 against Ascoli, and it was 90+5 minutes when Ivan, who jumped above all and headed home powerfully from a teammate’s free-kick.
Thanks to Ivan’s heroic act, his side went wild as they celebrated the tight draw.
